The short answer is Industrial revolution.
My favorite answer is beer and wine. The only thing that white people had different from other peoples was the taste for fermented beverages (yes, other people had their own fermented beverages, but was not hide spread). Without it, no city could maintain the huge population without absurds outbreak of cholera and other diseases that come from poisoned water.
Without a huge amount of people in a few cities, there was no need for industrial revolution. Why peasants need tractors if the workforce is cheap and everyone produce their own grains?

Ferment beer while traveling. Beer can be stored for 1 year after being fermented!
