to appreciate jazz you have to study it like classic literature IMO, learn it from the greats and then work forwards into the future

there's so much context, so many references, in-jokes, little hints. There's a rich history and context in jazz and jazz theory that rivals classical music anyday, that can be discovered if you put in the time.
