I don't see what your point is. The Afghan regime was a British puppet for a long time, up until the Third Anglo-Afghan War which you linked.
The British only cared about protecting British India, and the Russians were creeping up. So they made Afghanistan a buffer, and Russia agreed. Without Britain, Russia would definitely not have stopped at Afghanistan, they would have gotten it too.
