I was talking to a colombian girl I befriended on facebook a few years ago about I story I read in the economist.
They were talking about how colombia was planning on building a giant outdoor escalator in the favela type of area (poor houses on tall hills), so the old poor people would not have to walk up the stairs with groceries (they still do in Italy).
I explained to her that it seemed like a stupid idea, because outdoor escalators in San Jose/Campbell always seem to be borken...

I am very skeptical about how economically efficient it actually is, I would expect them to break down on a daily basis after they were 3-5 years old....
Escalators are worse than elevators for repairing.
I mean why not have free 'rental' scooters, like the kind you find at walmart?
Minimal upfront cost, easier to repair, and much cheaper over the long term.
