Here's a concept I made. The five stars are the five Great Lakes surrounding the state (technically, only four of them touch the state, but whatever).

I agree. Literally half the state flags have the same state seal + blue background design. Perhaps they feel a bland design like that is ideal, because if its a unique design, like Texas for instance, it can increase state pride, which can lead to "trouble-making thoughts" like contemplating secession. Basically, the whole point of the current design is bowing down unconditionally to the Federal government and offering full submission to it.

All of those designs look pretty nice, except for Rhode Island and Connecticut. In addition to removing the blue background stuff, the state seals should be removed also, or at least simplified. Replace the seal design for Rhode Island with the anchor, ring of stars, and ribbon with just the anchor, for instance.
