Here's the Turkey dilemma. Turkey itself is solidly 85% non-European from a geographic perspective, and definitely Middle-Eastern, but Turkey ruled a corner of Europe (the Balkans) for 400 years.

It's not that ruling a bit of Europe made Turks Europeans. It's that the Balkans are a micro-biome of the Middle-East in Europe. There is a Turkishness in South Eastern Europe that naturally gradients towards Turkey.

So it's not that Turkey is European, but a corner of Europe is irreversibly Turkified.

I agree to a certain degree that if we are to consider Serbia, Albania and Bulgaria "European", we may as well consider Western Turkey as part of that same cultural continuum.
