I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but what's the point? I mean I understand that it's your heritage and part of what Ireland is, but English is so deeply rooted nowadays and frankly a lot more useful.

The point is the cultural ties and heritage, it's sad that the only pre-modern literature Irish people can hope to understand is the literature of a different culture. I'm sure you can understand the place of language in cultural and ethnic identity. Not everything is about pure utilitarianism otherwise you could easily argue for a proactive program to erase globally useless languages like Swedish.
>>
>>67611292
What the...?
>>
>>67611328
Of course not everything is about utilitarianism, but at some point you have to ask yourself if it's worth the effort and loss of utility. Had Irish been spoken by, say, 30-40% of the population it would've been a completely different situation. One in which heritage certainly would win over utility. Just like we don't learn old norse.

>you could easily argue for a proactive program to erase globally useless languages like Swedish
Being globally useful is not a language's primary function. It's about facilitating effective communication to those in your immediate surrounding, i.e. your own country and neighbors. In which case Swedish is extremely useful since the vast majority of Swedes speak Swedish and Swedish is largely mutually intelligible with both Danish and Norwegian. English is less useful in Sweden than Swedish. The same can not be said for Irish in Ireland.

There's a difference between national pride and autism. Resurrecting and effectively dead language falls in the latter category. There's only one country that have done that so far and that's Israel.

But it's still completely dead, no one speaks it and if someone suggested you should start speaking it they'd be laughed at.
>>
>>67611739
That's the idea of a program of erasure. Replace Swedish (or Scandinavian, they're obviously same language tier) with English because then Swedes wouldn't even need both languages, they would only need the one. In the long run this would be better.
Anyway reviving Irish doesn't imply any loss of knowledge of English so it's not like it's an actual negative.
>>
>>67613163
>In the long run this would be better.
Who knows, perhaps it would be. But it doesn't matter since it's never going to happen.

>Anyway reviving Irish doesn't imply any loss of knowledge of English so it's not like it's an actual negative
You're always going to be stronger in your L1 language than any L2 language you pick up. Even in Scandinavia, where English proficiency is very high, we're still far from being on par with native speakers. There certainly is a difference between knowing it and being a native speaker.

Look, I'm not saying that it's a good or bad just that from a practical perspective I have a very hard time seeing it happening. Furthermore, even if it did happen what would actually practically speaking stand to gain? Would it preserve your linguistic heritage more than it is today? Perhaps, but you already are preserving since Irish is taught as an L2 language. What will you have gained in everyday life? Next to nothing. In fact, it could very well distance northern Ireland from the rest of Ireland further, making a reunification even less likely.
>>
>>67613163
ignore the swedish moron. as a linguist and translator i think the revival of gaelic is not only possible but an excellent idea. dumb 'one world no borders' type idiots propose ideas like esperanto or everyone speaking english but language is absolutely everything to the identity of a people and there's no good reason ireland should abandon its own native tongue

This empowers your opinion regarding the resurrection of a virtually dead language how? >>
>>67614512
Quite convenient not having to refute anything you disagree with. I mean, it screams of you not actually being able to defend what you believe, but it is very convincing nonetheless.

While we're on the matter of native languages, why are you speaking English and not one of the actual native languages of Australia?

Latin is a special case anyway
>>
>>67615209
>speaking =/= learning it as part of ones cultural heritage
So then you agree with my conclusion that resurrecting it is a pointless exercise in national romanticism?
>>
>>67613744
Even L2 speakers from the Gaeltacht have native level proficiency, I don't see it being a major problem, at least it would sitll be above the proficiency in Scandinavia.
Unification is meaningless if Irish culture and ethnic identity is cast aside and it would always cause more hardship than a revival of Irish would anyway. There is often a suggestion that Irish people should be concede something to northern unionists when the truth is they are just largely disagreeable people who have no interest in being Irish whatsoever and don't really deserve anything from us.
>>
>>67615314
be forced to concede*
>>
I know that feel.
>>
>>67615303
I agree with you on the point that reviving dead languages is utter nonsense. But as long as there are people still speaking it, preserving it should be mandatory as, again, part of ones cultural heritage.
>>
>>67615431
I absolutely agree in preserving it for future generations. It's a very good thing it's being taught in Irish schools.

>Even L2 speakers from the Gaeltacht have native level proficiency, I don't see it being a major problem, at least it would sitll be above the proficiency in Scandinavia.
That's purely a result of English being so dominant. If it wasn't, it's not entirely unthinkable to imagine that Scandinavian proficiency would surpass that of Ireland due to our languages being linguistically closer relatives to English than Irish is.

>Unification is meaningless if Irish culture and ethnic identity is cast aside
Yes, but your cultural heritage is far more than just a language. Surely there is room for compromise?

>the truth is they are just largely disagreeable people who have no interest in being Irish whatsoever and don't really deserve anything from us
Is this a common sentiment among the Irish? Couldn't it simply be a matter of not having been taught enough about their culture to care?

Northern Unionists largely aren't ethnic Irish, they mostly identify with Presbyterian planter populations who came from lowland Scotland and northern England in the 17th century. They basically represent a failure to integrate.
