Seals get knocked unconscious almost instantly. They feel less pain than if you shot them, considering its hard to actually hit them in the heart or the head.

If you lean that way, you could say being against seal hunting is kind of racist because it's less damaging to the environment and to the animals itself than other forms of hunting are, and people are only singling out seal hunting because some Canadian Aboriginal depend on it. But I think people are just against it because muh feelings they're so cute :(

Seals are needed to keep certain fish populations in check. And in turn, humans keep the seal population in check so that they don't hunt the fish to extinction (the fish supply is reduced thanks to human fishing). It's better for the seals and for the humans to let the seals live in the wild.

Originally they were kept in check by whales as I understand it. Thanks to the natives and then commercial fisheries in the late 1800's, early 1900's local whale populations were hunted to near extinction for blubber. Since then the seals population skyrocketed since their predator were fucked royally.

There are more than one species and subspecies of seals around here.

Baltic ringed seals, though endangered (itämerennorppa) and grey seal (halli, harmaahylje) are both legal to hunt in Finland. Saimaa and Ladoga ringed seals (saimaannorppa, laatokannorppa) are endangered and protected, though the Ladoga one has much stabler population
Thus it is perfectly legal to hunt seals in Finland, just not the inland subspecies!
