Are all japanese trees like japenese dicks; small and thin with no bush?
>>67504174
Japan in the 18th century was as populous as England, France and Italy combined.
>>67504257
Those are paintings. Not drawings. Completely different things, as different as drawing and writing or writing and painting.
>>67504312
I think it's the traditional style.
>>67504416
Better but it still took the gooks over 100 years to get to that. I imagine now they've just caught up to 18th century Europe.

They can draw your waifu

It was isolated as fuck, though. New art concepts and trends don't flow that way, so they were kinda stuck to a certain style until the opening.
On the other hand, Western Europeans had their art flowing to and from each country, as well from the Maghreb and Byzantium.

Since you seem to know about the subject, can I ask: to me it looks like some movement akin to Realism never really caught on in Japan, is that right?
>>67503897
:^)
>>67504648
I'm actually ignorant on the subject, but I happen to have artists on my family.
Anyway. The art movement never caught on, since it was a "counterpoint" to Romanticism (typically Western). But you see plenty stuff resembling the Western style, this pic for example is from 1890.

>van Gogh
Good call.
I think what people here are considering Japanese traditional paintings and printings primitive/non-refined is because they're usually flat. There's barely any shadowing or colour gradient, something plenty van Gogh paintings also lack.
>>67505162
It doesn't help either that woodblock printing was popular on Japan at those times, and it doesn't allow subtle or complex gradients... unless you're willing to stamp the same work over and over with how many woodblocks as you want colours. This one for example probably required 7+ "stampings".

When I visit 4chan first, Aussies are said to be the worst shitposter but now it's Canadians.
Did they all immigrate to Canada?
>>67505162
>printings primitive/non-refined
That was the whole point of ukiyo-e. It was pre-industrial stamping (like postcards-ish) for the masses. Plebs gonna pleb I suppose.
The fact that Van Gogh and other Impressionists ultimately became total weebs for this "primitive art" is pretty ironic.
>>67505162
Van Gogh is shit. All impressionist art and any art that followed impressionism is shit.
>>67505679
Must be sad knowing that shitty Japanese stamps influenced the Euros before Americans did.
Also,

Artists being artists.
>>67505679
I personally don't like it either, I'm all for "subtle" art, but I don't consider it shit.

Their isolation was their own fault.
>>67506864
I don't... know, really, if it was sensible or not. I wonder if they wouldn't end up like us Latin Americans if they didn't enforce those policies, or maybe like the Philippines.
Van Gogh and Monet were the first weebs.

>>67503897
Japan was ahead of its time. Now, the only art that people look at are silly cartoons. Realism a shit.
>>67503897
I would rather have the japanese picture on my wall.
