Its basically impossible to change it cause that would require an amendment to the constitution and 3/4 of the states ratifying it. Including the smaller states which get disproportionate voting power from it.

The US was designed to be a union of friendly states with free movement a few set federal laws to keep some things consistent, a shared military, and vastly different states with different more localized laws. Doing away with the electoral college would mean redesigning the fundamental relationship between the states and the federal government.

Should it be done? Yes.

Will it happen in my lifetime. Fuck no. Why would small states and swing states ever consent to being made irrelevant?
