Former colony. There are 570k Surinamese people in Surinam and 350k here in the Netherlands. The country is incredibly diverse due to the slave trade:

>27% ethnically Indian
>37% African
>14% Indonesians from Java
>3.7% Amerindians

The rest is a mix of Chinese (3%), white people, even Middle-Easterners.

They are equally diverse in terms of religion. About half is Christian, a bit more than a quarter is Hindu, and about a fifth is Muslim (includes Ahmadiyyah).
