Yeah, the two different variations are quite different from each other by pronunciation, grammar, and writing style, but they're still mutually intelligible for both variations

Think about the differences between dutch and afrikaans, it's not that different when it comes to mutual comprehension and all of that, but it's different enough for it to be something more than just a different style of the same language, but for some reason both portuguese variations are still considered the same language since they share the same core words and overall structure

Brazilian portuguese is way more "informal" than european portuguese in the overall, and both variations have bigger differences than let's say, american english and the british variation
