The united states is a federation, in a sense it's normal that the president is not elected by the people but by the state, justifying the system.

Plus it has a positive impact, since it gives more representation to people living out of big cities. If you see the electoral map, Clinton got her voices only in big cities. It'd have been unfair to all those in the small towns and would push presidents to favorise city people to get re elected.
