Unfortunately not much. Not their history, more like an overview of Incas, Mayans and Aztecs like "They had temples that looked like this, calendars like this, dressed like this". The culture is taught but not any history of their origins or dates. American history education after the bronze age is painfully Eurocentric. Aztecs and Incas are only relevant when Spain is conquering them, likewise we only start learning about Black Africa (aside from Black History Month) when Europeans get involved, nothing before Mansa Musa. Same with India, aside from the two religions spawned there, it's a void of information from the Indus Valley people up till Europeans conquered it.

We hvae to take 3 years of a language though and if you take Spanish you have to learn Latin American history and pick a country to do a boring history report on. No offense, but European/Ancient history is just a lot more interesting than Honduran etc.

Don't know why the other American is shitposting so much, I have no clue why anyone here would have such strong feelings about Mexican history

>"Our astonishment was indeed raised to the highest pitch, and we could not help remarking to each other, that all these buildings resembled the fairy castles we read of in Amadis de Gaul; so high, majestic, and splendid did the temples, towers, and houses of the town, all built of massive stone and lime, rise up out of the midst of the lake. Indeed, many of our men asked if what they saw was a mere dream. And the reader must not feel surprised at the manner in which I have expressed myself, for it is impossible to speak coolly of things which we had never seen nor heard of, nor even could have dreamt of, beforehand."

>Why did they build in the middle of a lake?
the Aztecs(after being kicked out of a kingdom to the north) wandered for weeks, searching for a place to settle. Huitzilopochtli(their war god) appeared to the Mexica leaders and indicated a place where a great eagle was perched on a cactus killing a snake. This place, smack dab in the middle of a marsh with no proper ground at all, was where the Mexica founded their capital.

thousands of Maya still live in Mexico, as well as Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Today the Mayan people are estimate to number over 7 million.

I don't know about the rest of the US, but in California we learned about Amerindians as a whole in elementary school, then learned specifically about American Indians, Aztecs/Mayas and Incas/South American Natives in three separate units in high school.

what a fucking load. I always knew I was indigenous, but never knew shit about my people(or who my people even where) until I got interested in history during high school. Even then everything I learned was all self taught.

>>
>>67315436
that's base af. Most of my knowledge about Mayan history comes from books I've read.
And they are in fact written by British or American scholars most of the time, we just learn the basic, the history periods and main cultures in primary school, the languages and territorial extent in middle school and almost nothing but their interaction with Spaniards during Highschool.
We learned about Amerindian cultures very early and that's the main problem

I would have assumed that most of the education we received would have been from Mexican writers too, but most of the material we got was either American or was written by Brits, Guatemalans and Germans. I went to a magnet school in chicano central where they'd try out new curriculum before implementing it on a wider scale so I don't know to what extent this curriculum is taught outside of Los Angeles, but I know the department head was trying to push for more Pre-Hispanic history state wide as well as more Asian history. I think it's important that this shit be taught. We had an option to learn Maya too but I gave up after the course was over. Still have the textbook.

>>67315498

>regarding Natives, Canada isn't considered different than the US.
damn i though they were better
in my U.S. history class we went from war to war and only mentioned Native Americans ONCE. and that was only because of the natives Lewis and Clark encountered.

interesting historical fact: "The first white men of your people who came to our country were named Lewis and Clark....All the Nez Percés made friends with Lewis and Clark and agreed to let them pass through their country, and never to make war on white men. This promise the Nez Percés have never broken. It has always been the pride of the Nez Percés that they were the friends of the white men." -Chief Joseph

eventually the Nez Perce were forced off their lands when whites found gold in a river. after a long and bloody escape attempt to Canada, the Nez Perce were put on a reservation where many of them died.

one of which was a man named "Day-Time Smoke" who is said to have been the child of William Clark

Most of that land was vast plots of ejido land divided amongst hand tool using subsistence farmers. Mexico didn't have widespread industrial machine/vehicle dependent farming until the late 80s, right before NAFTA hit. All that furrowed land can be put to much better use now that it can be farmed far more efficiently with a smaller labor base. Even with that all said and done, a revitalized Mexican agricultural sector, even if smaller than before means, a significant number of jobs opening in Mexico.

One of my uncle's did that on and off for a couple of years. Then he stopped and I think he's planning to sell it all when my grandmother dies.

At least I still have the house my dad built and a small triangle of land my mom owns. I'm actually thinking of buying the little triangle of land next to it(which belongs to my aunt, I don't think she'd mind since her son's are fuck up's) when im older and have substantial money and have my own little thing.
