After the civil war and during the white terror it was with the KMT holding strong control. But then they drank the Democracy Kool-Aid.
The problem is the younger generation overwhelmingly oppose the old order of things and recognise a Taiwanese identity separate from the chinese identity. And the KMT still imagines reunification with the mainland, which at this point would mean getting cucked by the CCP.

I don't understand why they like gays so much over there though. Apart from Singapore it must be one of the most conservative non-Muslim countries out there when it comes to sex.
