He's almost right. Some of the LARGEST volcanoes can, if they erupt (none of them have for an extremely long time) shoot out so much ash into the atmosphere that they block out the sun. Now, it wouldn't disappear altogether obviously, but it would partially block out the sun GLOBALLY, which would make temperatures plummet.
Eventually the ash would come back down again, but until then you'll have an ice age on your hands.

It's a similar concept to a nuclear winter.
