My friend adopted it at some point, don't know if he still uses it

I know in general it's pretty popular at club level, and it's decent enough (even though it's somewhat unambitious for white). I think it's popular because you can learn a few key ideas which work against pretty much any black defense, and thus you can play it with very little opening preperation.

Easy to learn, fun to play, very solid, double-edged, can be pretty closed but suddenly out of nowhere explode into tactical attacking craziness (for both players).

It's popular for a reason (especially at club level, but even at the very top level it can be seen occasionally, though at those levels it's much more drawish and less exciting than at club level).
