Any Japanese people here?
We have to talk...
-Why are there no open world rpg videogames set in feudal Japan?
-Why are there no games like Grand Theft Auto set in Tokyo?
-Why does every open world game that comes out of Japan not have anhthing to do with Japan?
(Xenoblade Chronicles,Dragon's dogma,
Metal Gear Solid 5, Final Fantasy XV)
I want a gane where I can run around ancient japan as a ninja or samurai, or a modern day game where I can be a yakuza member and drive around tokyo in a cool car.
I have played Yakuza 1-5 and Way of the Samurai 1-4, but it is not what I want.

bump for legit question
Because the majority of Japanese people think RPG should be based on European fantasy story in part due to traditional best-selling series like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. Also, it's exotic and interesting to us Japanese. Not that there have been no Japan based RPGs, but it's considered a niche genre and they don't feature it in blockbuster games.

I guess executives of Japanese game makers are old men who used to develop nes and fnes games. Maybe they don't understand what's so fun to play open world games.
Also, Japanese lack 3D graphic tech. Or maybe 3D doesn't suit for Japanese.
GTA5 is enough for me.
I want to play GTA Tokyo version

Japanese video games haven't innovated since the mid-00's. You won't see them try anything new anymore, just stick to a genre template that they know will sell.
Sleeping Dogs is probably the closest thing.

>-Why are there no open world rpg videogames set in feudal Japan?
because modern japan is adjusted to hate, ignore or have distaste for pre ww2 japan
>-Why are there no games like Grand Theft Auto set in Tokyo?
because japanese don't fetishize realistic violence, corruption and organized crime
>-Why does every open world game that comes out of Japan not have anhthing to do with Japan?
because japan does not like to look into its past to replicate into games, also pretty much all media including anime and vidya is about escaping the regular geographic, social and cultural boundaries of their society
not jap btw, just someone who pretends to know what they're talking about
