We had a lot to do with Byzantines which were really relevant at their time, mostly we weakened them and took their land (Serbia and Bulgaria did this), or something like Croatia which has a history related to Hungarians and Venetians. Then there's the post Ottoman period where great powers were constnatly looking over the balkan to expand their influence, especially Russia and Austria-Hungary, with Britain meddling to stop them both from growing powerful. So we aren't relevant on our own but we effected relevant nations
