I guess so. The thing is, written Greek was always in some artificial form trying to resemble Attic (classical Athens) up until the recent couple of centuries and the actually spoken vernacular is poorly attested. Also, the Byzantine era is like 1000 years so it was no the same in all of its time.
I personally have read some Byzantine texts like "De Administrando Imperio" of Emperor Constantine Porphyrogennetos and I could understand essentially everything he was writting and I think the average person would understand what he said.
The few texts that are in actual vernacular (e.g. the Digenes Akritas poems) from the Byzantine period are very easy to understand; it is essentially a dialect of modern.

In Dante's The Divine Comedy, Arnaut Daniel appears as a character doing penance in Purgatory for lust. He responds in Old Occitan to the narrator's question about who he is:

«Tan m'abellis vostre cortes deman,
qu'ieu no me puesc ni voill a vos cobrire.
Ieu sui Arnaut, que plor e vau cantan;
consiros vei la passada folor,
e vei jausen lo joi qu'esper, denan.
Ara vos prec, per aquella valor
que vos guida al som de l'escalina,
sovenha vos a temps de ma dolor»

(Purg., XXVI, 140-147)

So what ?
How 2 languages might be "close" if it is completely impossible for two speakers to understand each other ? English is much closer to dutch or german, this is why it is so easy for them to learn english.
On the other hand, french and english are so distinctive (pronunciation, construction of sentences, grammar etc...) that it is a hell to learn each other's language.
