Trump because a plurality of Republicans like him, and in a crowded field he was able to win states he wouldn't have in a two or three-candidate race, and gained so much momentum from that he couldn't be stopped.

Clinton, conversely, won the Democratic Party's presidential nomination because her only opponent was a senile, socialist nutjob named Bernie Sanders. Had someone serious like Joe Biden ran for their nomination, she wouldn't have won it. The Democratic establishment cleared the field for her from the get-go.
