Hi guys, /pol/ here. Just came from a thread regarding our family members in WWII and remembered I had this in a collection of things my gramps brought back from Burma.

Would anybody care to translate some of this writing for me? The ink has soaked right through on both sides so if the image needs mirroring let me know.
>>
It says "Get back to /pol/ you cock sucker"
>>
>>66791387
It says ""Anime was a mistake" Hayao Miyadzaki"

>>

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Luck_Flag

It's one of these.

Please contact the Japanese embassy and see if you can arrange to have it sent to surviving family members in Japan. It has a lot of sentimental value for them and the gesture would really be appreciated.
>>
>>66791387
OP, they're the names of Japanese soldiers
>>
>''To anyone from the invaders who gets to own this flag, we shat and pissed on it and you are a massive faggot''
>>
It's just a bunch of names, burn it or throw it away.
>>
>>66791629

Aye, I had a chat with another anon who linked me to that. Apparently however repatriating it with surviving relatives may go either way, they could sincerely appreciate it or it could cause a fair bit of foul mood, for example if a surviving relative is a family man or woman and they get back this flag on which they wrote some shit like "kill them cunts on sight" and things like that. Could be iffy. For now I'd just like to know what some of it says, mainly the guy's name.

>>66791674
My gramps took it off a bloke he shot, it was never meant to leave the guy's pocket.

It doesn't say anything like that. It's just names. His family would only be grateful if you were to return it.

I can read some of the names of people who signed it but unfortunately can't read the handwriting well enough to tell you the name of its owner.

It definitely doesn't say "Tanaka". Stop memeing.
>>
>>66792054

I imagine there's more than just names on there as it was typical to write good luck messages for the soldier, but thanks anyway.

Would you at least care to share some of the names you can read? I have no plans to return it yet.
>>
>>66792290
Why don't you plan on returning it? It's pretty poor form to loot the dead, and certainly never crossed my mind in Afghanistan.

武運長久(Good luck forever on the battle field)
小?田?君 his name(but,I can't read his name, coz, write in script Japanese)
??神乃加護(god bless you)
>>
>>66792290
Koyama is the most common name on the flag by far so I assume there's some family relationship there. You might want to look into that.

Also, a little boy named Tanaka Yuuta did actually sign it so I was wrong here >>66792253 but I don't think you'll find anything with that anyway.
>>
>>66792346
Killing a terrorist and taking his stuff maybe doesn't crossed your mind but killing an army soldier and taking a flag as a souvenir is ok for most people I think. And if I were you I would definitely take something as a souvenir.(Not personal things like photo, letter etc)
>>
>>66792346

Things were different 7 decades ago anon, the number of these flags taken by allied soldiers is through the roof. He took it as a remembrance item rather than for personal gain. According to gramps he shot this guy while his reg were going village to village in deep Burmese jungle, and this was one of the guys who had previously slaughtered the residents.
>>

>>
>>66793677
It's pretty much a family letter, just written on a flag.
>>
>>66793677
It's a flag signed by his family and close friends.

It's just as personal as a family photo if not more so.
>>
>>66793677
I'm amazed at how you can justify theft, regardless if it has sentimental value that means a lot to the families.
But I'm not surprised since you're from Turkey.
>>
>>66793784
>>66793822
Ok then name me one thing that can be taken as a souvenir and not personal on a dead soldier.
>>
>>66793865
Ottoman 57th infantry regiment flag is on exhibition in Australia. So if taking a flag is thievery, then your nation are a thief.
>>
>>66793925
Literally nothing, legally. But morally, I'm not going to judge people for taking military equipment/uniforms. It's understandable. Personal things are no good though, considering the value they have to their family. It's a respect thing. I full well understand how morals go by the wayside in war because that's just a coping mechanism for the shit you have to do, but it doesn't mean you can't do something to make things better decades later on.
>>
>>66794038
>considering the value they have to their family. It's a respect thing

It actually was quite dishonourable to lose these flags for any reason and as such repatriation efforts do not always go as we would like.

>>66793594

Thanks for the link though, I would like to see if I can get in touch with relatives, get some communication started first and we can go from there.
>>
>>66794026
It's more than a flag, that's the point. If that Ottoman flag means so much to you then I agree, they should give it back(That is unless Turkey and Australia agreed to display the flag in the museum in the first place).

But I highly doubt you care about the Turkish flag, seeing how you're only concerned about taking "souvenirs" from a battlefield where many have fallen.
>>
>>66794038
If he didn't take that flag then it would've never been seen again
>>
>>66792980

That flag means like a holy thing to us.But the point about a flag on the battlefield is you don't let them take it.If they took it , there is no meaning of asking them to return it after the war.By the way all the regiment died that battle.(not a single soldier survived that's why we lost that flag). What I mean is flag is not just a souvenir you take from the battlefield. It has much more meaning. That's why it's most precious souvenirs along with officer knives and swords.

The thing is, they still didn't surrender after Hiroshima.

Soviet invasion intoto Manchuria and a belief that you have 1000 nukes finally made them do it.

And one thing is pretty bizarre: A large part of their motivation to fight until end was a belief that they would have to give up the Emperor. And when they were finally prepared to do this you let him in his place anyway. What was the point?

>In an article that finally appeared August 19, 1945, on the front pages of the Chicago Tribune and the Washington Times-Herald, Trohan revealed that on January 20, 1945, two days prior to his departure for the Yalta meeting with Stalin and Churchill, President Roosevelt received a 40-page memorandum from General Douglas MacArthur outlining five separate surrender overtures from high-level Japanese officials. (The complete text of Trohan's article is in the Winter 1985-86 Journal, pp. 508-512.)

>This memo showed that the Japanese were offering surrender terms virtually identical to the ones ultimately accepted by the Americans at the formal surrender ceremony on September 2 -- that is, complete surrender of everything but the person of the Emperor. Specifically, the terms of these peace overtures included:

>Complete surrender of all Japanese forces and arms, at home, on island possessions, and in occupied countries.
>Occupation of Japan and its possessions by Allied troops under American direction.
>Japanese relinquishment of all territory seized during the war, as well as Manchuria, Korea and Taiwan.
>Regulation of Japanese industry to halt production of any weapons and other tools of war.
>Release of all prisoners of war and internees.

It's not as simple as a war trophy dude. Even my dad had no knowledge of this flag until my gramps dug it out of his war stuff when I was 9. He kept it as a memory of the soldier that could have ended his life but didn't. He believed in respect for all soldiers and didn't want every shred of this man's life to rot and be lost in the middle of a jungle in Burma.

>>66796353

Not really man. My gramps is dead now just like the Jap. This flag even meant more to him than the kukri set he was given by a Gurkha he served with and befriended.

why would we take foreigners when we have homegrown Orléans ?

They just don't have any legitimacy due to what their ancestors did.
The only legitimate way would be either a Spanish bourbon taking over by force and renouncing claim on Spain (that's what happened in reverse during the war of the Spanish succession) or the creation of a new dynasty.

You were on an island far away, so they could nuke you without having to deal with it later on.

If the war would have dragged on longer we may have gotten the treatment too.
You had no soviet rapetrain in turn and we had twice as much causalities overall.

Lel, cucked anons with no sense of forethought on a Kyrgyzstani snakeskin-fabrication resource archive won't sway me, however I've had a few helpful anons link me to some organisations that run repatriation efforts and I'll be sending some pics in to see if I can get in contact with relatives. People can be cunts and if it turns out they are a bunch of cunts if I manage to talk to any of them, well it's not leaving me.

As the Ausbro said if I could ask him now I'd do what he wanted but alas he is no more so I'll have to judge for myself.

Anyway, more translations would be great if anyone wants to chime in!

OP. You may not care, but we have a similar tradition in Sikh culture. To take mementos off in to battle(silk threads tied onto arms by sisters to brothers). We treasure these things even though they can be easily lost in battle.

I know it means a lot to you because of your grandfather, but I think it would be a proper way to honour his memory(by participating in an act of kindness and humanity) and giving closure to the Japanese soldier's family as well.

Still, that's just my two cents. I wish you the best. My your grandfather rest in peace.

I didn't say that. It's up to OP to determine what his grandfather would have thought proper. I don't see why he would have taken the flag if he hadn't meant for it to be kept, but obviously I didn't know the man.

My argument is that those trying to bully OP for even considering his own family, instead of just giving the flag away without a second thought, are wretches.

That's stupid. How are you going to know whether or not they deserve it? Because your friend translates a few sentences they said on Skype or from an email? That's assuming you can even find them without the help of professionals.

Ancestor worship is tradition in Japan. Almost every family does it and to break that tradition is seen as shameful - hence why almost no Japanese convert to foreign religions like Christianity and Islam. Being able to pay respect to their grandfather, especially if the body was never recovered, would be a great honour for them.

Really this comes down to who you think the flag has more sentimental value to. But personally you made it sound like your grandfather was haunted by his experiences and earning the gratitude of the Japanese soldier's family would probably have made him feel happy. But that's just my assumption of course.

>In Sid Phillips's book, You'll Be Sor-ree, he describes the role of Japanese flags played in the Pacific War, "Every Jap seemed to have a personal silk flag with Jap writing all over it and a large meatball in the center."[7] There are numerous books describing these souvenirs taken home by U.S. Marines and U.S. Army Infantry. Another example is Eugene Sledge's book With the Old Breed, "The men gloated over, compared, and often swapped their prizes. It was a brutal, ghastly ritual the likes of which have occurred since ancient times on battlefields where antagonists have possessed a profound mutual hatred."[8] In a 2008 article of the Monroe News, a World War II veteran talked about the flag brought from the Pacific theatre. He said he did not search every Japanese soldier he shot, as there was usually not enough time. He found the flag while fighting on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. He said soldiers did not take large souvenirs, such as a katana (sword), for fear that someone would steal it; a flag could be easily concealed. The flag was being returned to Japan through Dr. Yasuhiko Kaji who searches for the owner and/or their family.[9]

Unlike the normal NEET that browses this site I actually enjoy talking to people. I have a few friends dotted all around the globe so I'm well up for making another, and according to your own words it shouldn't be difficult to strike up a conversation about our ancestors. That's not to say I won't return it just because they don't want to "be my friend", that's not a problem, but you can tell a lot about people from the way they talk about things.
>>
>>66800688

I understand, but I don't think you'll be able to find them without help from OBON. You have to remember the people you're looking for are going to be in their 70s or 80s by now. Most of them don't even know how to use the internet.

If it eases your worries at least look up the flag returning ceremonies on YT. They're taken to a shrine and given to the soldier's surviving children by a Shinto priest. It's very emotional and the family will be put in contact with you to say thank you.

I see. I thought it was somewhere around Johore because my grandpa help the Brits. There's a sad tale about him and the brit buddy (his superior).

I would advise delivering it via. a ceremony by a Shinto priest if you want to do it in person. The Japanese are really odd when it comes to personal items like this - it's offensive to bend or throw away someone's business card, so something like this would be extremely sensitive.

Good luck though. Keep us up to date with how it goes. Hopefully you get a trip to Japan out of this.

Perhaps because no one at the time would have even considered it as stealing?

He took something from a dead enemy combatant, he (almost certainly) didn't know what it meant, or what it said. It's no different from taking a German's Luger or something of the like.

Besides, if he hadn't of taken it, it would have just rotted away anyway, what use is it then?

Your comment is translated into Japanese on a Japanese website. A lot of Japanese are angry."Westerners don't know history because history is written by victors." I hope Japanese(including me) have to study more English and teach the world true history as study, science and learning.

I think the person who had this flag is from Fujiyoshida or Kawaguchiko in Yamanashi prefecture.
Because, Omuro Sengen shrine(left side of flag)is a shrine in Kawaguchiko, and in kawaguchiko and Fujiyoshida ,There are many Watanabe and Oyamada people.
In fact, when my mather is a child, two thirds of people are Watanabe clan.
My grandfather is living in Kawaguchiko and he was born in WW2, so I will ask him about this!
