But we were. Once most countries gained independence from Spain, we were relatively OK. What fucked most of Latin America over was the lack of vision of the people in power in that time, we gained independence just because oligarchs were tired of paying taxes to Spain and being restricted to commerce with whoever they want.

That and the fact that the U.S. grown bigger in every aspect in the 1800's, thus eventually fucking us over in the XIX and XX centuries because people in power in most of the Hispanic countries only cared about muh monies and were to lazy/cared/bribed to compete with the U.S.

Of course not all countries were like this, for instance Argentina and Chile. That's why they were relatively better than all of the Hispanic countries by the beginning of the XX century. Too bad the U.S. didn't want good countries in the backyard so started to fuck with them and all of Latin America.

The Spanish vice-royalties in South America were never allowed to have domestic production of manufactured goods, they were required to import them from Spain as a way to keep them dependent on the Europe. This meant that they were quite underdeveloped compared to a nation like the US when they declared independence. Nations like Gran Colombia failed due to the geographic and ethnic divisions within them, making them a nightmare to actually try to govern. These countries also had no republican tradition like the US did. In the US, the colonies all had elected legislatures which governed most internal goings-on in their colony (until they didn't, which is why we rebelled). The Latin American colonies didn't have this tradition, so basically what happened was the landed elite or military strongmen just took over and had a tendency to serve themselves rather than develop the country. Add in during the 20th century foreign (ie mostly US and a couple European) interventions, communism, and the rise of cartels and you get modern South America.
