Most of Gustavus Adolphus's army were non-Swedes however, in fact only about 13,000 of 140,000 troops were Swedish.

That's just because we expended all our troops defeating Denmark, Poland and Russia just prior to the 30 years' war. The core and command was still 100% Swedish, using mercenaries to compliment their numbers.

Normally I wouldn't care but this was a pretty important innovation in warfare since prior battalions were just composed by a mish-mash of different nationalities, whatever the nobles could scrounge up, which hurt discipline and morale.

That was mercenaries. In fact it was all mercenaries, sweden only declared war on poland because after the 30 years' war ended they had more mercenaries than they could pay for.

The initial plan was to loot the prussian area, but sadly the prussians hailed sweden as rescuers from the catholic polish oppression, and since the poles sucked so hard sweden was able to easily take their capital at which point 90% of europe was like "look this was cute at first but if you annex the entirety of fucking poland then we need to kill you"

When Denmark declared war on Sweden, king Karl X said "thank god" because he finally had an excuse to make peace with poland.

Light cavalry had high casualty rates but it must've been awesome. Rushing to the enemy's flank, shooting up a bunch of his badass heavy infantry and playing polo with some peon heads. Denmark never stopped being a major player IMO. Their invasion in 1675 is still by far the closest Sweden ever got to complete annihilation, and since Denmark owned Norway they could instantly occupy half of Sweden (which hilariously failed during the Theater War).

The balance of power in Scandinavia was ultimately just a bitter rivalry which demanded the others' subjugation, but saw both of us weakened only to lose against outside forces in the end. That's the problem with warfare Europe, there's no honor.
