initially they were invaded from literally all sides because all they had was a field with no natural boundaries, and eventually overcompensated for border security so hard that they reached the pacific ocean

they're so invested in this strategy that they'd prefer to have this security of buffer space over economic prosperity, and historically it's worked out for them (see hitler, napoleon)
