My family has been in this spot, my cousin married a low class local, and it wasn't such a deal, but families are very very important in Mexico, even more in catholic families. They behave more like institutionalized social groups, meaning that business, friendship and support are all connected. Going back to my cousin's in law... his father was an alcoholic, so my family decided to cut any kind of communication with him, and are very judgmental about him seeing him.
