Myslím si, že ruština má oveľa zrozumiteľnejšie slová než bulharčina, slovinčina (Slovene), kajkavčina a čakavčina. A medzinárodné slová často pomáhajú zrozumiteľnosti, napr. slovo aeroport je zrozumiteľné nielen iným Slovanom ale aj angličanom či nemcom. Niekedy môžu byť slová odvodené z praslovančiny skôr na škodu, než na úžitok, a to v prípade, ak zmenili význam a vznikli "falošní priatelia":
http://forum.wordreference.com/forums/other-slavic-languages.44/

U väčšiny slovanských jazykov je takých slov málo, no v slovinčine je to každé druhé slovo. Podobne je na tom bulharčina, ktorá má navyše cudziu gramatiku.

The question was about grammar, not about orthography.

And if there was a contest for the most complicated orthography among Slavic languages, we would obviously be the winner.
You only have the y/i problem, while our spelling literally consists of shit like that:
1. Unstressed я/e/и
2. Pre-stressed a/o
3. Unstressed a/o/ы/(e)
4. o/ё after ш, ж, ч
5. ы/и after ц
6. ь after ж, ш, ч
7. Doubled consonants

>>

Still 100x more phonetic than English.

But what is hard about Russian grammar compared to ours?

>>66536033
U mňa je to naopak, slovinčina znie (zvučit) podobne ako slovenčina, no skoro ničomu nerozumieť. Slovinčina má podobný "zvuk" ako slovenčina, no nezrozumiteľné slová, alebo s úplne iným významom.

Otrok (SK/CZ) = slave
Otrok (Sl) = child

Dekel/Dekl (SK/CZ) = manhole or toilet seat cover
Dekle (Sl) = girl, of course!

Etc.

Ruština znie (zvuči) úplne inak, no slová sú zrozumiteľnejšie. Často stačí len odstrániť pár samohlások, moloko - mlieko, volosy - vlasy, korova - krava, boroda - brada a podobne.

Maybe our grammar is not more complicated, but Russian is certainly not exceptionally hard among Slavic languages (for Anglos all Slavic languages are hard as fuck). I am not saying it is easy for non-Slavs, I am just annoyed that some Russians think Russian is somehow harder than other Slavic languages, if you want a hard to learn for non-Slavs language, try Polish.

There are Eastern Slovak dialects whose speakers would have even less trouble with Polish (and Slovak Gorale, who speak an intermediate Slovak-Polish dialect) And reading it is not so horrible, it is harder than reading text with diacritics for me, but easier than cyrilic.

My uncle learned fluent Polish to the point of calling it his second native language by just going to Poland for trade purposes for years and talking to people. IMO Slovene is the worst starting point for learning other Slavic languages (apart from Serbocroatian which must be easy for you), through you still have a massive advantage compared to non-Slavs.

On duolingo, I got an instant level 8 in Polish when I tried it for fun, and I do not even know Polish.

>>66539958
>Well, for instance, you have no "to be"
It's just 6 additional words you need to remember. Not a big deal actually.

What really seems more simplistic in Russian grammar, compared to Czech and Slovak, is noun declension (if we don't count the stress patterns, of course). For example, we always use -ah for Prepositive plural, -am for Dative plural and -ami for Instrumental plural (except for detjmi and liudjmi). We've also mostly got rid of u-declension endings in singular, so 2-nd declension words always use -a for Genitive (except for a couple of diminutives like "kofejku" and "saharku"), -u for Dative, -om for Instrumental and -e for Prepositive (except for those 140 words having an additional -u form like "v lesu" and "na snegu").

Some stuff in Slovene is almost fully understandable. Other, like if it was encrypted. Other Slavic languages seem to be much more consistent in understandability for me.

>>66541018
I wondered about it, I linked it before, but here it is nicely explained: http://forum.wordreference.com/threads/mutual-intelligibility-of-slovak-and-slovene-lower-than-slovak-bcs.3243676/

"I find Slovene's vocabulary to be the most Slavic. Obviously there are a lot of internationalisms, but the core vocabulary, words used day-to-day, not technological/scientific/economic jargon, are more likely to be derived from Proto-Slavic or Common Slavic roots.

Having that said, that doesn't mean that the meaning stayed the same or that that purity is necessarily helpful.

For example the fact that the word for bread "kruh" is derived from PS *kruxъ does not make it easier for anyone else expecting "xleb." As a matter of fact, "brót" would be (arguably) easier to understand for other Slavs.

It's not that Slovene uses a synonym, or they have another word that other Slavs don't recognize, it's the use of words, like kruh, that mean something else in other Slavic languages.

Basically, it's false-friends galore.

The fact* that Slovene uses more Slavic root-derived words means that the frequency of creating a false friend is high. If Slovene changes the meaning and other languages keep it, it becomes a false friend. If Slovene keeps the meaning and other languages shift, then it becomes a false friend."

It is conservative it using words. Not so conservative in keeping their meaning.

It truly is pathetic how a bunch of people far removed from culture cling to what little bits of the Old world culture they still remember, even though the result is a butchered, plastic, dead product that does not have much to do with actual culture; the American has managed to take a living thing that is culture and turned it into a cold, dead commodity to flaunt around as if it bore any importance at hand. As the white American (this is yet another meme, for only an American would care about race as there is no way for him to even start talking about ethnicity; a non-existant fact in the USA) puts this abomination on a golden throne to showcase as a form of quasi-identity, he notices not how he is just as pathetic in this regard to the negro whose past is unknown and has therefore created his own myths.

All in all, the American complex is a sad twist of claiming superiority and yet clinging to the little bits of culture that had been twisted into something alien to the European observer. A country of no nation, no ethnicity, no culture, no history and no language, the United States of America are the prime example of the decay of the West; a truly gruesome picture that should alert any and all on-lookers.

looking at this >>66543512 aren't the soft and hard vowels kind of swapped (except for i and y) ? Why would the vowels that soften consonants be called hard?

it's because jan is stereotyped here as the most basic dutch name ever. You know the farmer with clogs type of dutch. Its funny to hear it elsewhere

Heh. Jano (informal form of Ján) is the stereotypical Slovak name, especially for Central Slovakia. You would imagine a shepherd in the mountains or a potato and cabbage farmer.

Is it moving like in Russian? Does your dialect have pitch accent?

To be honest, until I started to be interested in linguistics, I had no idea where Slovak has word stress or even what word stress is.

Interesting to see something we can relate to as opposed to ornate Church Slavonic texts about religious. And the literacy rate in Old Novgorod was amazing. No offense to Russians here, but I think Muscovy was about the worst possible center for Russia. The Novgorod Republic was a far better place imho.

Nice, may I ask through what is the inverse ´ accent mark on some i's?
>>
>>66548595
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%8C

I used it to mark palatalization here. It seems much more elegant solution to me than j or i with another diacritic. It's weird that no one came up with it earlier.
>>
>>66548837
Interesting, but why not just use ˇ ?
We use it for palatalized consonants ď, ť, ň, ľ.

I actually did use ĭ, but it seems too... I don't know, huge, untidy?
>>
>>66549293
You are right, but... i gets palatalized in Russian? I did not know that, I thought only consonants do.
>>
>>66549745
No, ì means that the consonant before it is palatalized: lìudi = ľudi = люди, dìadìa = ďaďa = дядя, denì = deň = дeнь.

There are about 15 paired soft consonants in Russian. Don't you think it would be too irrational to add a separate letter for every of them?

What is crime like in the Balkans?

How prevalent is organised crime?

What is the police like? Are they helpful and cooperative, or are they the type to haul you over to the station over an argument and give you a beating?
>>
HU AP
>>
>>66550185
the government themselves are mafia so pretty prevalent id say, the police are corrupt and not very useful, but theres no violent crime like murderings or such, even muggings, such things are rare, higher organized crime though, sure
