What went wrong? Why did almost all the city-states collapse (pic related being a notable exception) pre-European arrival?

Actually know fellow burgueramerican, Mesoamerica was far from a state of collapse, leaving aside the Aztec altepetls that formed the core of the Aztec empire in central Mexico there were several equally advanced kingdoms like Huastec, Tarasco, Zapotec or even several epi.Classic Maya cities. The near totality of Mexico was fully civilized by Mesoamerican related peoples as far north as souther Tamaulipas and even the Chichimeca (Barbarian) tribes in the rest of the territory were in fact settled and advanced peoples, in Chihuahua people like the Paquimé were a part of the same cultural complex as Puebloans while in Sonora, Sinaloa peoples like the Yaqui and the Raramuri (Uto-Aztecs related to Nahuas) had themselves built large road networks and settled towns as well, leaving aside pockets of wilderness in less resource rich areas really Baja was the only part of Mexico without significant visible civilization but even there people had a fairly advanced boat building and fishing culture. "Collapse" is only a term that describes civilizations which had flourished prior to European arrival.
In South America the Inca, Muisca/Chibcha, Guarani and Arawaks all had civilizations advanced to a degree at least near equal to northern Mexico, in Central America Maya cities survived as well, the conquest of Guatemala was a fucking war, not chasing tree dwelling stone age peoples.
Seriously.
