I met a guy from cyprus a long time ago (he was a greek) and he explained it very simply to me, what he said if I remember correctly was that the conflict was more or less a religious one with turkish muslims who settled the northern part over the last centuries pushing to join turkey while the orthodox greeks living there forever opposed it, all while the british struggled to maintain their own holdings in the island, and for now the island is split. how wrong am I?

What I said was that the nature of the situation was that there were Turks in a majority Greek state. Regardless of whether or not the Cypriots chose independence or to unite with Greece is immaterial. The fact of the matter is is that even in the North, Turks weren't the majority yet Turkey invaded and effectively colonized the north and has created a situation where Cyprus has not been able to unite peacefully for over 40 years despite a majority of Greek cypriots preferring bilingual coexistence.
