This is a Chicano thing, we don't give a fuck, in Mexico City no one would bat an eye, to the contrary it would probably make you popular for the night, same thing for guys, it's ok if you wear a fake moustache and a sombrero here.

We are not an exclusive culture, "apropiation" is an American thing.

>>
>>66451572
No one is dressing up as Mictlantecuhtlib Chicano, Catrina means "elegant lady" in Spanish and the tradition comes for the drawings of Posadas.

The original tradition began writing roasts of living people in the form of eulogies in dia de muertos, which itself is a syncretic tradition. It is mestizo culture by definition, therefore Mexican.

Make a rosary with sharp cactus spines then fucking stick it into your scrotum and put the whole thing if you want to celebrate in the genuine Aztec way dumbass, look it up I'm not joking.

It is very common in movies and tv to show crowds of mexicans painted up in the way this thread is during Day of the Dead stuff and also a fuckton of costumes
>>
>>66454580
It's during the couple of weeks of mixed halloween/day of the dead parties, it makes cosplay fucking elegant. Chicanos won't likely openly admit to this but this is also American influenced (dressing up wasn't a part of original day of the dead) which really you people should pick up on to fucking halt the appropiation bullshit. Traditional day of the dead is more like pictured, people gather in cemeteries and do altars at home, lately themed altars (eg dedicated to dead rock stars) have become popular.

Really, the cool thing about Mexican traditions is they really are alive and evolving, it isn't just a few enthusiasts trying to re-create exactly how things were done a couple of centuries ago, which sadly eventually kills tradition.

I guess since ours are mixed, they were never either purely indigenous nor European, we tend to be more comfortable mixing and evolving. Posadas (the Christmas parties that piñatas come from) were originally for the very religious for instance and have increasingly become just fun parties with traditional aspects attached.

Not him but you should know that because this is primarily a mix of native and Catholic influence it us mostly celebrated in the south and center of the country, not so much in the north which is populated primarily by people of Spanish descent.
Because of this the more south you go the more "authentic" day of the dead experience you will get, also there's a difference between the way towns and cities celebrate.
Guanajuato and Oaxaca will give you a more traditional experience while in Mexico city it might be more hit or miss, depending on where in the city you go and luck, they are likely to take it a bit less seriously.

Pic related is what you'd find in your topical town in Guerrero state in the 1st of November.

This isn't entirely true, Mixquic is generally regarded as being the better one.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Andr%C3%A9s_Mixquic#Day_of_the_Dead_celebrations

If I wanted to show a tourist anywhere else I'd take him to Pátzcuaro where the lake setting makes it much more beautiful/impressive. Guanajuato will have the streets filled with obnoxious drunks and Oaxaca is the one that's very hit and miss, a lot of hipsters bringing cringe to the whole thing.
>>
>>66457537
nah, but if during your visit you buy street food (which you should do) the typical "bullying" prank to tourists is to spice the shit out of your food even when you screamed "no chilli please!!" and everyone will laugh their ass off when your face turns Crimson red

Kek
People usually aren't that rude to tourists unless you piss them off, or they are drunk, they know tourism is good for the local economy, although sometimes it drives up prices.

I just want to add a bit about the holiday.
Day of the dead is not celebrating death or mourning the dead loved ones, it is celebrating the memory of the passed ones and honouring them by enjoying life twice as much, both for you and for them, so you eat more, drink more, and laugh more, this isn't a time to be solemn and mournful, that's during the funeral right after they die, not during day of the dead.
Still, some may choose to leave the favourite dead person's food and drink as an "offering" if you will, on their tombstone, as a sign that we still remember them and that they're still in our hearts.

DotD is a jolly time, the other anon said it well "is more like mixture between a serious/espirutal day and a sarcastic/colorfull spectacle;"
Don't be afraid to talk and hang out with the locals and have fun with them, that's literally the purpose of the holiday.
>>
>>66458098
That sounds like a proper way to die. Finnish funerals are so boring and we don't remember our dead at all. Maybe once a year closest family members bring flowers and candles to the grave.
>>66458184
I read something like that about the dia de muertos. Hence why I actually want to visit it and at least try to do it the Mexican way. I hate holidays where tourist act like they own the place. I'm a visitor and I guest and I like to have decent manners. Besides, you guys sound warm and nice so if Mexicans are anything like you, I'll be having a good time.

altar dia de muertos.jpg
62KB, 600x300px
Just to explain the celebration which we haven't gone to in this thread, the basic idea is the dead return on the two days the celebration lasts, children arrive early on November 1st, the santos inocentes, and adults follow on the 2nd, day of the dead proper. So small altars are built on homes or in graveyards and zempazuchil flowers are strewn to mark the road for the dead who cross over from Mictlán, the land of the dead, people usually prepare their loved ones favorite dishes so they can taste them again and even leave booze and cigarrettes in the ofrendas, toys for children or whatever was their favorite thing (I'm guessing for most people on this board it would be manga, vidya and an open internet connection) in some places the bones of the deceased are even dug out, and people hang out with them before changing their clothes and burying them back again.

Yes, believe it or not this is all sanctioned by the Catholic church, obviously there's a lot of blessings and a special mass. Alegrias, amaranth and honey candy are also eaten which goes back to the original Aztec celebration in which an idol of Huitzilopochtli was made with these as well as the blood of human sacrifice, and the idol was later broken up an eaten by all the people who devoured their own god. The symbolism has obviously been shifted to Christ.

Theologically I don't think the church has pronounced on whether the dead actually return but de facto it is apparently accepted Mexicans are an exception to other peoples in this particular issue.
>>
>>66458466
Cheers m8
One last thing.
If you really want the authentic DotD experience the best way would be do like the other guy recommended and get a guide, ask him if he could get you in touch with a Mexican family, maybe his own, so you can spend a few days (I imagine you'll arrive a few days before November 1st at least) embedded with them, sleeping at their house, hanging out with them (when you're not touring around) eating authentic™ Mexican food and all that jazz rather than just staying on some boring and expensive hotel.
But if you think you really need the privacy of a hotel room that's fine too, just try to not be there too long, the fun is outside of it!
>>
>>66459400
I want to see this. what should I avoid doing besides the typical dumb tourist shit of being loud, etc.
>>
>>66459400
I'm a Finn so I really need a hotel room. But it's just for sleeping, otherwise I'm all in to spend my days enjoying the celebrations
>>
>>66459718
Well first ask yourself what Do You want? Do you want a traditional DotD experience or a more fun and relaxed party? After you decide do some research about the different ways people celebrate in each state/city, and choose the place you believe will provide you with the experience you want.
There's some good info already on this thread but don't be afraid of researching elsewhere.
Lastly I think the saying "when in Rome do as the romans do" applies here, look around and observe the mood of the locals, are they cheerful? Are they calm but sober and slightly somber? Act accordingly and you'll fit in.
Good luck.
