Mathematics and programming are considered cool in Russia. Soviet education is not quite dead yet.
I'm a linguist and we still had 4 years of mathematics and 2 years of programming, not even related much to linguistics.

Also a job in IT-field is the only way here not to be a hungry poorfag (and also a good way to emigrate).
