since 1917 slavs got raped by commufacism and people mentaly got destroyed. each country became a slave of Russian influence. So the point is that after 1990 each soviet union country wanted independecy become a strong dependecy from Russia, and Russia is interested to handle like: Look, you went independet and you can nothing without me. Russia interested to have control over independent SU countries. But, The main point is slav mentality, it is also Problem in Russia that people are slaves of Oligarchs,in Ukraine the same, even after maidan people are poor and cant even realize the whole potential they have to build own real independent country, like small EU contries.

During the Russian Empire Ukrainians were denied any separate existence as people. The Uniate Church was banned and the ROC imposed on them by force.
