Also, all of the countries I mentioned also have some or a strong history with protestantism as well (and the counter-reformation as well, but that was mostly the Austrians fault), but none of them have any history with Eastern Orthodoxy, which means Finland is still more eastern in that regard. It's less marginal part of Finnish culture than it is part of Central European culture.

You're right, the cold war paradigm it won't be relevant forever but it still is. Hence my objection to the idea that there is no such thing as central Europe only East and West. Even during the Eastern Bloc, there were massive differences in government, politics, and culture within Warsaw Pact nations and the Soviet Union. Even under a cold war perspective it's a worthwhile distinction.

They've had massive differences today. Poland Czechoslovakia and (especially) Hungary had vastly different lifestyles and quality of life and personal, political, and economic freedoms than the vast majority of socialist countries had in the 70's and 80's. East Germany had that cultural connection to western social development through West Germany.

Not to mention that the experience of Stalinism was different from Central European and Eastern European countries. Whereas Stalinism lasted for thirty years following leninist rule in eastern Europe and then for another decade, central Europe had Stalinism for only 5 years and 0 experience with leninism. "Central Europe" could be considered the newer arrivals to the eastern camp by the cold war perspective. These countries had different political dynamics from that of the Soviet Union, the leadership of these countries faced pressure from the USSR from the top down, and that of their own citizenry and political autonomy bottom-up.

Historians, sociologist, and economists absolutely draw distinction between how the cold war in central and eastern Europe. The only sources that have not drawn distinction is in the vernacular whilst the cold war was still going on and the lasting effect that has had in our terminology.

The pre-cold war idea of central Europe had countries on both sides of the curtain. To update that term, East-Central Europe is accepted and used now instead. It's the universally accepted term in academia now.
