'A/an' is like the default for a noun. You use 'a' if the noun begins with a consonant, and 'an' if it begins with a vowel.

A table. An apple.

'The' is for something specific. The table. The apple.

The problem with English is that you have an и sound that is long, and something like a short ы sound (old people, Czechs, Ukrainians pronounce this like in English, Poles and Russians do not).

So this pair is differenciated by two features at the same time:
1) Duration,
2) Vowels are different.
Now when you analyse it closer, you will find that English long и, like in "beet", isn't actually a long vowel. It's a normal Russian и that over time slowly glides into ы. That's why words like "seen" don't sound like "cиин" at all, it sounds more like "cиын" or "cийн".

Apparently I cant retain anything without immersion. I learned more Spanish in a month in Spain than I have in 6 months here.

Honestly, is there any language in the world that is "easy"? I don't think so. Maybe the romance languages get easy if you are conversational or fluent in one of them, but any of them for somebody with no background in them is still hard...

I don't know if my pronunciation is really that bad, definitely not compared to your average foreigner, but my teacher is always calling me on out this specific thing.

복잡[복짭]
손등[손뜽]
잡혔대요[잡펴때요]

I also don't know how far into Korean you are but you are very quick to call someone out over something when you don't really know the depth of what I am talking about. It might be easy for you to pronounce it in Canadia but the Koreans are extremely bad at trying to understand what you say if it is not said like a native. It's not as though we are talking about a tonal language here where slight difference can be totally misconstrued.

also I have no idea what you mean by this

Yes, I like Korea a lot, but I'm not really fond of this area. If I could choose to live in any other area I probably would have but this was my only option for a city at the time. I used to live in the countryside of Gyeongsangnamdo and I much prefer that region as a whole, rural or metropolitan

I've met 4 foreigners who've ever learned Finnish and two of them were Japanese. I guess it has a lot to do with Finnish being very different from languages people usually study. On top of that, you'll have trouble finding Finns who won't immediately swap to English when speaking with a foreigner. I've no doubt you can manage it if you put your mind to it, but it'll be difficult and have less utility than other languages might have simply because nearly all Finns can communicate in English.

Give*)

Anyway, "-ing" words generally describe things that are happening. E.g., "Get out of the room, mom; I'm fucking my girlfriend!!!" or "I'll be there in a minute, I'm washing the dishes".

"-ed" is just something that has already happened. "Yeah, mom, I fucked her last night!" or "Don't beat me, I washed the dishes!"

Your language sounds like ooga booga caveman talk, whenever I say it out loud I'm left mentally grasping for some fucking helping verbs that just plain aren't there.

"I am going to the store." becomes "I going(Hope you pick the appropriate verb for the context and remember the appropriate suffix to stick in this spot so they know what the fuck you're talking about.) store.", savage as fuck.

I asked earlier today in my class "How do I say I'm going to go get something, as in, 'I forgot my umbrella, so I went to go get it?'"

What ensued was an explanation that instead of having a simple catch-all word for fucking getting something, you have 5+ verbs depending on the context.

I won't go so far as to say it makes my brain hurt, but a lot of people like bitching about how hard English is to learn but other languages have bizarre barriers to foreign speakers as well.

Don't get my wrong, I'm learning this shit because I want to and I enjoy it, I'm just saying I'm having a hard time getting a grasp on it. That likely has to do with me not studying hard enough, but this is my second year of these classes and I'm still getting thrown through a loop with all of that masculine/feminine/neutral/nominative/accusative/genitive/prepositional/dative/instrumental/singular/plural/animate/inanimate/hard/soft/exception/fuck you rigmarole bullshit.

I'm probably being hobbled slightly by the fact that nobody really speaks much Russian where I'm at, so I don't get to practice it in a natural learning fashion.

>"How do I say I'm going to go get something, as in, 'I forgot my umbrella, so I went to go get it?'"
It's because "get" is a meme word, not even a real word.

>first you learn tonnes of vocabulary
>then you speak to foreigners and find out that you could only learn "get" + thousand prepositions to communicate well
The other word is "nice"
Knowing "get", million prepostitions, "nice" + smiling like an idiot = fluent English.

This is one of the things stopping me with arabic. People sell arabic as opening 450m speakers when really you are virtually limited to each individual country.
