Have you tried going to societies just to meet new people? Another problem with brits is that they can make best mates with strangers when they're drunk but when they wake up to a text from the next day 99.99999% of the time it gets ignored, it's better to meet them sober and then bond with a binge drink
If all else fails, look who else is usually on their own in lectures and talk to them, they're probably in the same situation as you

I am in the second year. They all have friend groups already.
And as i study photography, i pretty mych browse /p/ and they had a pretty good opinion on photography university. It's for nothing else than networking, meeting new people.
It is hard for me to break into those friend groups, since they feel like their are closed. There is noone sitting by themselvs, except me.
I went once to a Neo Pagan society, full of women. I instantly spagetti all over the place, sat there for the introduction 30 mins and left because spagetti.

I got lucky because I was there to be a recluse in foundation and then when I started the course with everyone else I knew what was coming and jumped on
I agree that groups are pretty closed off, but the third years I live with are in your situation and only this year (apparently after noticing I had friends on my course and they didn't) have they decided to make a conscious effort to talk to people
Apparently it's worked well for them, instead of trying to dive into a group where you'd instantly be outcasted for being the new person, try to talk one on one with people whether it's when walking to classes, waiting for lecturers or whatever, just do some networking and then people will make more of an effort to talk to you, the only reason they're not is because they don't have a clue who you are
Language and culture societies are never really the best because they're swarmed with girls and dickheads, I prefer the speciality ones like sports / film / vidya, they're full of surprisingly normal people (albeit a few cretins)
