Better idea here is that healthcare system is not private fully so that everybody can get their class of service, fair pricing and maybe near universal coverage. Everybody is taxed 3-4 times to subsidize child, elderly, poor people's healthcare and buy it on market price. It is mixed stupid system, some kind of reverse socialism, that costs shitload of money and fails people.

No, because we can get full coverage travel insurance before visiting there. I usually buy insurance for a whole year at a time so in case I get stuck in a hospital for longer, I'm still covered.

I've never needed to use it though since the only time I ever got sick abroad, I just used the hotel's doctor in Hong Kong, some Indian doctor who diagnosed me with a skin infection.

A friend of mine from the UK, their parents were over visiting the USA and his dad had to have his appendix removed, it burst or something extremely painful. The hospital tried to bully them into paying their bill like a bunch of loan sharks. His mom called me asking advice on what to do, told them to not pay/sign anything and make the hospital contact the UK Embassy. Part of it is people who overreact to shit because they don't work in healthcare and don't know how it works.

People see a $100,000+ hospital bill and have a gut emotional reaction to it. The hospital doesn't actually expect you to pay that shit. Even if you don't have insurance they just assign you a case worker. They'll retroactively sign you up for Medicaid. Especially with homeless people, the hospital just eats the bill, they know you're not paying shit.

That said there are a load of problems with our system. But people overreacting doesn't help.
