So I just found out about the Scots language today. This shit so fucking surreal. It's like English, but it's...not.
Is this what it's like for Spanish and Portuguese speakers to speak with each other? Or is this more equivalent to what other languages call a "dialect"?
Spanish and Portuguese are much more different. Scots can reasonably be considered a variety of English

Post examples so I can judge.
Seems a lot more different than the Iberian duo.

Maybe it sounds more similar, but Spanish reads a lot less different from Portuguese than that is to English.
Maybe it's as close to English as Portuguese is to Romanian or something, but even then, maybe more.

seems more like a dialect of english than a language.

Thing is I can read it well enough. The grammar is pretty much the same as English, some words while spelled different are still phonetically similar to English.
I always figured a "dialect" was a fancy way of saying "accent" (since English is never said to have dialects), but now I'm starting to doubt that.

It's dead now, Scots all speak Scottish English instead.
Old Scots poetry from when it was living (like 1700s or 1800s at the latest) is cool though.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne*?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

>a """"dialect""""

Thing is romance languages sound fairly varied but they are spelt very similarly, Romanian aside.
I like to think I know English as well as a native since I've been speaking it since 3rd grade, but those Scottish words throw me off quite a bit.

It's a dialect written and spoken by lower class folk. If you think you're too good for English then just learn Gaelic or something. Damn porridge-wogs.

idk man to me it's just typing phonetically in their accent with words that you can figure out with context
i think spanish and portuguese are a lot more distinct
