IIRC her family payed a lot to get her body down. That rarely happens because it's so dangerous to drag bodies down from there. She died close to the summit.

Most of the bodies are eventually blown off the mountain, or more recently are being pushed off the backside of the mountain.

Between all the garbage and the Rainbow Valley on each side it's amazing that more people don't just say, "Fuck it. This is really stupid."

There's a part of Everest that's called the Rainbow Valley because of all the corpses with bright clothing. Some fell, some were pushed down after they died on the way.

Francys Arntsiev, aka "Sleeping Beauty". She was the first US woman who summitted without oxygen.

She and her husband, like most climbers who die, died on the descent. He last words to her husband were reported to be, "Sergei, don't leave me up here." Sergei went for help, but was found a couple of years late. He suffered a fatal fall trying to return to his wife.

I saw about a decade ago some guy hand glided over everest. There was a wingsuit jump from the summit a couple of years ago. I wonder who will be the first quadraplegic to summit .... without oxygen.... without sherpas ... etc.

The summit is just the half way. They stay there too long or have already pushed their bodies past the limit and never make it down. Some get bad altitude sickness and don't realize it before it's too late. Basically they are too obsessed with getting up there that they don't know they should have turned back long time ago.

The climb to the summit usually starts very early in the morning before dawn. It's difficult because it's an upward climb, in the dark, with now hundreds of other climbers with you impeding your progress. Once you reach the summit at some point after dawn, you hopefully get your ass off the summit and head back down before afternoon. Now that's you're tired from the climb, you're relaxed from achieving your goal, etc and the lack of oxygen for 8 hours starts to really kit you. And climbing down is always, always more difficult and dangerous than climbing up if only because you're headed 'backwards'. Now add the fact that there are literally hundreds of people now impeding your descent as they head up, and well it's a fustercluck. And remember you have a limited time in the "death zone" above Camp 4 before the body just shuts down.

At least that's my understanding.
