The whole conflict began when Assad chose to support the Iranian pipeline over the Saudi one. Of course the US would have an issue with this seeing as Saudi Arabia is one of their closest allies and was the first country to agree to sell oil in dollars. Russians clearly do not want Saudi oil in Europe, as they are themselves the top supplier, but they would prefer Iran in that they want to sell oil in euros instead of dollars.

The result is a proxy war between US-Saudis and Russia-Iran for who will get access to Europe.
