It's a different kind of metal with a different atmosphere, Beherit for example was very influenced by Sarcófago, south american metal excel most in the brutal/primitive old school side, Finland has more melodic stuff filled with keyboards, female vocals, etc

I honestly don't believe that Beherit put any effort into their early releases. No idea, why they become so popular. And I think you're generalizing our metal scene too much. There are a few melodic bands but there are equally many other kinds of bands.

They are pioneers but I don't listen to them. Neither of them stayed strong throughout their career. They had a couple iconic albums but the rest is nothing to brag about. Metallica and especially Slayer I really detest. They were just in the right place in the right time, i.e. there wasn't any competition.
