there's different kinds of suburbs

suburbs in middle of nowhere, where you even have to walk like 10 minutes just for a bustop or some sort of commercial area. Typically at the edge of the city boundaries. Then there's suburbs that is next to commercial or industrial areas, but it's not downtown so it's relatively quiet and still cheap to live in.

Either way you're going to need a car unless you want to make a 15 minute commute into an hour bus commute.

We have buses. We're the furthest out in our district and it's 5 miles. Kids have long bus ride, so yeah there is a price to pay. Rural people care passionately for their kid's education, so we have among the highest graduation rates and college attendance rates. Our kids don't get in trouble because they know their parents will rain fire on them.

Cities are more based IMO, but American cities tend to be Downtowns, Yuppievilles, and Ghettos, with little if anything else. Rural areas are also more affordable and/but more isolated.
