Back during the Cold War, India was semi-socialist and also kinda anti-Western due to butthurt about colonialism. They were also a rather staunch Soviet ally back then, but after the Cold War ended, then relations with the West improved and they dropped socialist planning mechanisms.

They still have warm relations with Russia and buy most of their military gear from there, but also source equipment from France and Israel nowadays.
