Britain and France fought on the wrong side.

For a war that lasted just under two years (October 1853 to September 1855) it produced an incredibly high loss of life. At least 500,000 men died, Russians accounting for 80% of that total.

That's about 75% of the total casualty figure for the American Civil War which lasted two years longer.

Disease also caused most of the casualties in the ACW rather than combat action. At least 600,000 men died in the war however the single largest engagement (Gettysburg) produced around 40,000 casualties. I believe WWI was the first major conflict where most soldiers died in combat rather than from disease.

The war also exposed the pretty bad weaknesses in Russia's infrastructure, especially the lack of a decent road network or the ability to equip the army. They simply were not able to get enough men to the front in time to save Sevastopol from an Allied army with some extremely mediocre generalship.

However, there were reports of Russian officers and generals who would get blind drunk and lead their men on suicidal missions and charges.

Not only did Russia not get ahold of Constantinople, they were forced to cede a small piece of Moldavia. After getting his paw smacked, the bear wouldn't try anything in Europe again for the next 20 years, instead concentrating attention on expansion in Asia.

Actually it had a lot to do with the French obtaining concessions from the Ottoman Empire to permit the passage of Catholic pilgrims to Jerusalem. When Russia made similar demands regarding Orthodox Christians in the empire, Constantinople refused. The reason was simple: unlike France, Russian "sympathy" over Christians in the OE was not out of charity but out of imperialist expansion.

The Ottomans thus declared war on Russia in the autumn of 1853 knowing that, although they couldn't win on their own (the Russians quickly sunk the Ottoman navy off Sinope) that Britain and France would come to save them.

Russians occupied the danubian principalities and introduced the prototype of a form of government that they wanted to use as the framework to reform the empire, which was alright, but then they went too far and tried to prep Wallachia and Moldova to be annexed by the empire, which is when we chimped out.

Also, earlier, russians backed a romanian revolutionary against the ottomans and then assassinated him when it turned out that he didn't want to hand over Wallachia to the russians after the ottomans were thrown out.

Religion aside, Romania has nothing else in common with Russia.

The 1877 war was a similar case; they tried creating a Greater Bulgaria that was essentially a puppet of Russia but again the European powers wouldn't let them do it. Luckily that time they solved it at the negotiating table instead of on the battlefield.

The Ottomans had a terrible track record in wars with Russia. I think they fought like 15 or something wars and lost all but 1-2 of them.
