Can't really compare with anything. And there are many of different kvasses. In Urals for example it is not sweet at all, in western Russia it is sweeted hard, there are cheap and expensive ones and all of them are different to some extent.

You can make it yourself.

large loaf of whole wheat bread (600-700g)
8l of water
250-300g of sugar
5g of yeast

>cut the bread in slices or cubes and dry it in the oven (140°C for an hour or more should be okay, don't burn it otherwise it will be bitter)
>crush the bread or cut it in small pieces
>put it in hot (not boiling) water and soak it for 24h
>squeeze it through cloth (if something sneaks through forget about it), you should get 8 liters of liquid in a color of cloudy piss

now for the yeast matrix
>pour a glass of your piss-coloured liquid
>two spoons of sugar
>heat it up to a temperature of around 30°C
>add your yeast
>let the yeast agitate (you will see gas bubbles on top)

>pour the matrix into your kvas
>pour everything into whatever vessel you plan to brew it in
>apply fermentation lock (there are diy methods to do it altough the single use pvc ones are cheap as fuck)
>ferment for 9 days
>pour into bottles
>if you like it sweet you can add 3g of sugar per bottle, but watch out during the fermentation process cause if you add too much sugar the bottle can blow up

When i went to moldova, we used to buy kvas in a small shop, that bottled it for us in PET bottles. You could chose from different brands and it was really good and cheap as well.
