I see that it would be incredibly fun to have, but fairly useless and very expensive.
>>

Used cars are cheap as fuck in the states, f30 BMW's can go as low as 10k and we don't pay insane eurotax,, its kinda tradition for parents to buy their kids their first car, at least where I am

However I went to high school in a more wealthy town in NJ and there were rows and rows of new BMW's and audis, everyone else had new civics and fords

That's only in places like Jersey, Jew York, Connecticut

In the south you might have a parking lot full of pickup trucks, in a California town you might have some lux cars but mostly electric cars

I never bothered getting a license but used cars aren't that expensive. Also gas is much cheaper here than what you're used to.

Pic was my high school's parking situation. People who would arrive early also parked on all the side streets around the school since you wouldn't need to buy a pass to do that.

do you think 18yo are responsible drinkers?
Besides they get wasted since their mid teens just like the rest of us.
>>
>>65875185
>Getting your license is really expensive in yuroland.
This, the average number of hours to pass your licence is around 40 which costs around £1000. My friend who is a driving instructor in the Netherlands says its very similar where he lives, add in the cost of a car, the daily running of it and insurance and very few kids can afford it.
>>
>>65875897
thing is cars are cheaper here than there, it's the insurance that kills you

>>

Cars and fuel is ridiculously cheap in America.
>>
Yes... kinda.
The thing is: you get your license with 18 here. (most people get them as a gift from their parents, outside of hipster cities like Berlin or Hamburg you pretty much find no 18+ without an license)
But: You finish school with 18-19, 20 max. So there are just very few people that could even own cars. And since public transport is quite good and cars are expensive not many people without a good income (read: 18 year old schoolkids) own cars.
>>
I could afford getting a used car and paying for service, fuel and insurance, but I have absolutely no need to do it as long as I can drive my parents car whenever I want.
Around the city I just walk or cycle or take public transport.
>>
>>65875185
Why are americans still in school at 18yo?
>>
>>65876322
Its for the sports teams bong
>>
In bönde yes, in bigger cities they usually use public transport or bicycle.
>>
>>65876239
>do you think 18yo are responsible drinkers?

I have seen very few people killing other people with drinking.
Retarded drivers, especially young ones on the other hand...

In 12th grade, the last year of school for most americans, most americans age from 17 to 18. This is called senior year. After this year, americans can go on to college and uni
>>

>no wonder your people are so god awful dumb
And you lot are known to be brainboxes? You finish your GCSE's at 16, get to do A-levels if you are not braindead for 2 years, then go to university at 18.

>>
>>65876363

>>

Finishing high school doesn't mean you finish education, genius. When you finish you go to a sixth form, college or start an apprenticeship. It's compulsory to be in education until you're 18.
>>
>>65876221
parking passes are 800 fucking dollars for 2 semesters at my uni. Fortunately my apartment complex gives me a spot and a spot for a guest
>>
>>65876684

When did they change that? When I left school people were allowed to join the workforce at 16 if they wanted to, actually getting a job when you are under 18 is a different story.

I paid £800 for the year on my 1.6 litre Renault Clio which isn't that bad considering I'm 19

In the state of NJ, you must have your permit for 6 months before you take the test which is like 100$.

To get your permit, you need to take a written test, get an 80% or more, then have 6 hours behind the wheel before you get your permit

You get 3 2 hour lessons, each were about 130$ each

I don't know about other countries, but in the UK, most drivers on the road would have no clue how to pass a driving test, including your parents

I learnt how to drive with my dad, and learnt how to pass the test with my instructor

Lessons aren't mandatory, but you're going to struggle without them unless your parents are driving instructors

I passed on my second time, and someone who I knew who thought he was God's Gift at driving passed on his 4th time because he thought all he needed was his dad to teach him.
While he spent his time doing J turns in the Asda car park, I was doing things that would actually help me to pass

Drivers license are an entire industry here.
Tests used to be easy, so they made them hard so you have to pay to retake them multiple times.

And examiners will do fucking everything to fail you.
When I was passing mine the examiner told me to do an emergency stop (which really means "slam the fucking brakes even if your engine stalls") 50 meters from the "finish line".
He didn't do it to test me. He did it to test the other kid passing in exam who was driving behind me. He didn't react in time, and hit me in the back. I passed, he failed.

Each take is more money and after like 3 takes you have to retake the written exam.

With driver's licenses it also has to do with the fact that after basic training (~1500-2000€, 19 theory lessons and 17 driving lessons) you have to complete two more courses of theory and driving lessons (~200€ and ~400€) within two years to obtain your permanent license

You do not test on the road? This is why Americans crash so much when they come to Europe and rent a car.
>>
>>65879447
yes they let you on the open roads

they just don't let you drive on the motorways with a provisional licence or on the test here in the UK which is stupid because it means people can then drive on the motorways with 0 motorway experience

there are still roads that are like motorways that you can drive
>>

I live in NJ. Though it may have been because the DMV I was at was literally on a major highway and they didn't want you on that.
>>

Well, in the Netherlands people believe German cars are perfect, the Swedish Volvo is a hidden status symbol, French cars are for people who can't drive, Italian cars are known for falling apart and American cars are unsafe and consume too much fuel, and Japanese cars are cheap shit filled with gadgets.

The test is on a closed course. However you have a permit for 6 months before that where you can drive anywhere within your state with an adult in the car. To get to the DMV I was at you literally had to take a highway to get there, so they just assume you've had real world experience driving at that point.
>>

Is it like this on the rest of the continent? Over here you go straight on the road 1st lesson, no real tips they just throw you straight in.

They made me go out onto the 4-lane highway that was right next to the DMV and I almost got rear ended because I was being a complete retard

Maybe your way is best

Ford has been making cars in the UK for like two years less than Ford has been a company

All european fords have been designed in either the UK or Germany
They used to make a load of cars here, but not any more. The UK still makes something like 1 in 4 Ford engines

I got taken on public roads by my dad, it was just a super quiet one
I had it down in like 30 minutes. The rest of my time between turning 17 and passing was spent getting used to the road and learning how to pass the test

>Isn't that just a complete shitshow of stalling over and over again and pissing off everyone else
Atleast for me, he picked me up from my house drove me to a fairly quiet residential street and I started there. Didn't stall he just explained how to work the clutch and stuff. Was a bit fucking scary at first cause I came to a roundabout and was too slow going around. I think, by just throwing you straight in you're forced to learn a lot faster.FYI I stalled later on in my first lesson though.
>>
>>65879793
Doesn't matter. People still believe it.

But most American cars aren't even available here. You only see Fords and on a rare occasion a Chevrolet. But that's pretty much it.

Most states are silly with their driving laws.
Iowa here, it's pretty much like Europe. If you're under 21 you have to go through a driving course that costs around 200-300 dollers which includes class, and driving instructor time, and then pass a written test that costs 20 each time you take it.
>>
>>65880781

>>
>>65880199
Did that a bit too but not every lesson. My instructor told me before the test to be more 'cautious looking' when on the test, because although my driving was fine, he said I was "driving as though I had already passed my test". Passed 1st time though.
>>
>>65880972
The literally who state is Idaho

Iowa is pretty high up there though
>>
>>65875185
Here in this middle eastern country you can get a license at 18 but cars, gasoline and insurance are so ridiculously expensive (1,6 $ per liter) most peoples first car is something like ford fiesta that had 5 owners before for 10k $ and about 2k $ for yearly insurance and taxes.
>>
>>65880926
It doesn't matter. The government just wants your money. And if they don't get it one way they just figure out another way to get it. By taxing the purchase of cars, owning a car and using a car they at least know they've got the working people by the balls.
>>
>>65880381
>there are people who buy new cars? what the fuck haha
Someone has to, they do not come off the assembly line with 1 registered owner.

here in pennsylvania i took a super easy multiple choice test for my permit, then 6 months later i got my license. total cost was something like $60 and no required classes or instructors

Most of the people do get their driving licence during high school but very few have a car. Some people have a bike though.
Public transports are much more efficient here and there is far less space in European cities so if everybody had a car it would be a nightmare to park and drive in the city. Moreover, I believe it's also more expensive to buy a car or gas here.

sure, you have to prove you can go around a corner forwards and backwards, prove you can parallel park, and demonstrate proper use of turn signals.

it's fucking driving a car, not flying a helicopter, you learn from experience.

the written test covers various lengths they want you to keep from things. 3 seconds of reaction time for the car in front, at least 15 feet from a stop sign and such.
maybe a handful of state specific laws.
