Depends where you are going. Rio has one of the most safe cities in the country. The capital of rio is relatively safe for being a huge tourism magnet and security is quite present there. You'll be fine ad long as you limit yourself to these areas. I'll only warn you about Lapa, since it's where kids reunite after college at night so I always go there on my toes
