This is an excellent thing about the UK I think, we don't have many examples of bulldozing old things unless there's a very good reason. For example, after the great fire of london, we could have built the whole city in a new way, with boring straight boulevards and whatever. But no, we built things exactly the way it was before, and for that I'm very glad.

A other good example was that in the 60s there was a plan to build motorways right through the whole of london, and multiple ring roads around it. Thank god that fell through as well

In this day and age, what is the use of old city centers?? WHY ARE ALL OF YOU FAGGOTS ARCHITECTS LIKE THIS TODAY?
Is it the commie French influence? Is that it? Do you really want that brutalist commie crap that looks like shit after 8 years?

There will be no fascist paratroopers landing. So why are you commies always building bunkers?
>>

There are a lot of 19th century buildings being destroyed in my city at the moment, but I don't mind that. However, I don't understand why they pull buildings from our golden age (17th century) down to replace it with some commieblocks. It's not just happening here, but all over Europe.

>>65865995
Ego of a architect, commie local government, more space and cheap facade maintenance (but looking like shit since the beginning ).
And it ends up looking like shit and steadily diminishes value, but that is long term so who gives a shit?

Might as well wreck the whole city and build fucking city made entirely out of cheap concrete slabs. Not fucking parquet needed either, just put some lino or military tent cloth, who cares? Couple of those white plastic cheap chairs, maybe a sliding door somewhere and call it "minimalist" and "modern".
>>
>>65866356
Good, build modern buildings on top.
>I have old churches and old buildings
>culture
>>65866339
That's stupid, no building should be called a monument
>>
>>65865929
Not a communist, and not an architect. Many of the buildings look gaudy and aged, so why not tear some down? Keeping everything in the exact same form is akin to being stuck in the past. Those buildings aren't some sacred monument, they're just old buildings, and they vastly outnumber the newer ones.
>>
>>65866480
>and they vastly outnumber the newer ones.
???

Baits are lame
>>
>>65866521
Am I wrong? Are there now more modern buildings in these countries in total than classic buildings?
>>
>>65866192
It's not like most of these old facades ever stopped being usable, and Europeans have already proven now in the 21st century that a city CAN grow perfectly fine outside these historic hubs by the use of good networks and clever public transit.

Art and aesthetics are contributions to humanity too, and for over 2000 years design equaled form, but suddenly we decided we were too good for that and dropped the design part entirely. For what, exactly? Money.

Luckily nowadays we're starting to realize that pretty architecture and good urban environments are important to our everyday lives, so we not only preserve more, but a lot of modern architecture also combines the best of both worlds. Still a long way to go, but it's getting there.
>>
>>65865247
Thon Hotels is owed by Olav Thon, one of Norways richest people. You don't get that rich without cutting costs on everything that's not practical, he probably buys good and expensive spots and builds fuck-ugly buildings there to make up for the price of the lot.
>>
>>65866552
Yes?
>>
>>65865349
Money is more important than heritage, welcome to the modern age. Those old buildings are probably 20 times the cost to maintain.

Due to the rapid boom of Oslo during the industrial age and lack of native architects, German architects were hired to design most of the city, and Norwegian architects followed their footsteps in what became locally known as the "Berlinerstil". Left is Brussels sometime during the early 20th century, a very rich neighborhood, located about ten minutes away from the colonial affairs building, there was a tower at that spot that made up the wall surrounding central Brussels, but it was destroyed sometime during the 18th century.

And here's an interactive map of ariel photos of American cities that compares them back when they were urban developments to their current status as suburban playgrounds:

There was a time when America was more than parking lots and fast food franchises.

You literally destroyed the entire city center of your capital city. Thank God you spared Gamla Stan, but Norrmalm is gone forever.

Everything to the east, west and south of those tower blocks is gone nowadays

Don't kid yourself. Even in the pictures you post you can see plenty modern replacements, and I remind you there's a fuckhuge highway circling around the old town in Stockholm, which is supposed to be the coziest district of the city. While luckily nothing was replaced there, it's still an awful thing to put there of all places.

Well, I guess it is kinda normal (sadly) that the city does not ask the people what they think about new build stuff.
They just do it for very expensive/groundbreaking stuff.

The progressive part is probably some western cucks phenomenon, tho.
On the other hand they build pic related in Berlin right now which seems nice.
>>
>>65871076
While it is really old and therefore something special I really care way less about that.
It's basicall rocks in the desert. No place people actually live.
>>
>>65871194
Don't be such a crybaby. Some modern buildings can look very nice if cleverly put.
>>
ITT: I was born in the wrong century.
People that cling on to old and busted buildings and refuse to replace them with new, more efficient and better designed buildings are holding back progress.

>>65865838
Brutalism is the most perfect architectural style.

Nobody's crying about le wrong generashunn xDD here. The world is undoubtedly a better place now than ever by most measures, but that doesn't mean everything is better.
The past had good ideals too, a lot of which we have collectively seem to lost in the name of "progress".
>>
>>65871529
I think the big problem with those photos is that Modern Architecture is meant to be looked everyday, while Old/Classic one is made to impress.

Brutalism doesn't catch your breath, but it doesn't get old either.
>>
>>65871529
Ideals like gaudy, overdesigned buildings? We don't need those, function > form.

You can add style to functionality. Also, the key thing is not to shatter the urban landscape.
Pic related ally form and usage.

Why should form (always) have a negative affect on function?
How would for example this facade (>>65869720) stop you from modernizing the inside as much as you want?

Quality of life is very important. You will work much better in a environment that doesn't make you want to kill self.

Only reason commieblocks are atrocious is because of the sheer despair and soullessness they inspire. They are technically perfectly liveable inside.
>>
>>65872088
It's still way too much contrast. But Chile guy has a point - public funding being severely minimised these days, it's hard to pull off something neoclassical because that's the most expensive. Also, a 2010's building in 1900's style will always look fake.

One reason this building works is because it's isolated from any other oldish construction.
>>
>>65864616
In Limerick, the castle used to have social welfare tenement housing within it until the 1990s.
In 2013 they butchered the building and turned it into a very shallow museum, with a glass modern art building replacing one wall, and a lot of passageways within the walls and towers filled up with concrete.

Thankfully Galway's medieval city is very nicely preserved for the most part, though Eyre Square is cheapened by construction of more space for buses, and the removal of iconic features like the Crimean war cannons and the statue of Pádraic Ó Conaire, because drunk uni students would attempt to vandalise them, so they put them in the museum.

>>
>>65872034
>How would for example this facade (>>65869720) stop you from modernizing the inside as much as you want?
I'm going to bet that it was cheaper to demolish the entire building instead of carefully rework the entire insides for modern standards, all while taking care that the facade doesn't get damaged or worse.

>>65872193
With enough time, we could have whole generations that have lived their entire lives in commieblocks, without a drop in quality of life. It's all about getting used to it.
