It really is piss easy if you're American. Get your acceptance letter to a Uni, have proof of funds, and being American you can literally just show up. I went ahead and got my Visa before coming which meant a bit more redtape, but I seriously could have just gone to Germany, then showed up at the right office and claimed residency with my proof of enrollment.

The biggest thing you'd need to worry about is proving you can afford to live in Germany. They'll typically want to see around 9,000 USD or proof that someone (eg, your parents) will support you. I had saved up the 9k working and had a letter from my parents saying they would support me if need be.
