Normally yes, but the state the Russian economy is right now combined with the colossal clusterfuck that is mismanagement of spending from the Russian government since the Ukraine thing wont help at all. Russia right now is capable of striking an Eastern European country, winning before we/Nato could actively defend it.

It's a matter of numbers and speed. If you look at the forces that Russia has bordering Europe VS NATOs and how fast they could roll in you'd arrive at the same assumption.

It's the counter attack from the US where Russia could potentially get ass raped, but this is why Putin in the recent past has made a public threat to use low level nuclear weapons in a conventional conflict.

They would hope that the use of a nuke would freeze the conflict before the US goes into serious war mode and therefore allow Russia to retain its gains.
