Personally I like to toss the buns on the grill for a few moments while I'm pulling the dogs off, just enough to get them warm and very lightly toasted. Straight from the bag is also fine, though.

In all honesty it deppends on the situation.

I've gotten a hot dog from a food truck with a toasted bun before, I've toasted my own before, but I'd say it's more common to just use the bun as it is. (Untoasted)

Also if you're in Chicago don't put Ketchup on a Hot Dog, but in any case Polish Sausage is better IMO.

It depends on how you're making the dogs, and what style.

For instance, a Chicago dog is typically made with a steamed bun, because the hot dogs are boiled.

With a Polish dog or Italian sausage, the dogs are usually fried up or grilled, so the bun is toasted lightly.
